The school uniform was skirts and knee socks – freezing in winter but good preparation for the life that lay ahead.Īlways a lover of uniforms, Dotsy forsook the nun’s habit for a nurse’s cap and apron that set off her dark Italian hair and big blue Irish eyes. An only child with a full-time working mother, she was schooled by the nuns and spent her youth accompanying them after school in an era when nuns were not allowed out in public without an escort. The only daughter of Anne Marie McLaughlin (Annie) and William (Willie) Caraccio, Dotsy was born and raised on the Upper West Side of New York City. She came in like a lion on April 15 (tax day), 1928 and went out like a lamb two weeks shy of her 95th birthday. Dorothy Anne Gray (aka Dotsy) passed away peacefully on Main the Brentwood Nursing Home of Yarmouth, Maine.
